Art Blakey’s group The Jazz Messengers was for years a breeding ground for hard-bop talent. Countless numbers of future superstars honed their skills and cut their teeth in the drummer’s powerfully swinging quintet. With his solo on “Moanin’” 20-year-old Lee Morgan indisputably established himself as one of the most exciting young stars on the jazz horizon. Morgan’s crisp and brilliantly self-assured performance announced his arrival as the next trumpet hero. A dazzling technician with a piercing tone, Morgan’s pomposity is balanced by his strong blues sensibility and fluid lyricism on this crucial hard-bop classic.
